New England really is a magical place to live during the holidays. In such a family-oriented area we get some of the best holiday parties, traditions, and very often a white Christmas. Another perk of spending the holidays in New England? A plethora of cut-your-own Christmas Tree farms! Here in Essex county we have enough tree farms to choose the right one for your family, and you don’t have to travel far!
One local favorite stop is Crane Neck Christmas Tree farm, now with two locations! You can find the original location at 175 Wood St. in Groveland, MA, and the new location at 114 Crane Neck St. in West Newbury, MA. Both locations offer a classic “cut-your-own” tree style experience and they provide saws, twine, and assistance. Visit the West Newbury location on the weekends to get a chance to eat at the snack shack! Friendly dogs welcome on leash.
White Gate Farm, also in West Newbury has the nostalgic feel of a family owned tree farm. The farm has beautiful hills covered with trees of all sizes, and offer hayrides around the farm for families. Saws are also provided at White Gate, and after you chop down your tree stop inside for a complimentary cup of hot cocoa and some homemade zucchini bread!
Other great locations to pick and cut your own Christmas Trees include Turkey Hill Farm in Haverhill, MA, Tonry Tree farm in Hampton Falls, NH, and Ingraham farm in Georgetown, MA. Make a day out of cutting down your tree, and taking a nice family photo with the scenic backdrops! Although many farms sell hot chocolate and provisions, it can also be fun to makeup a big pot of hot chocolate ahead of time and bring your own in insulated to-go cups!
If you don’t want to cut your own tree but are still looking for a wonderful New England family experience check out Christmas On The Hill at Marini’s Farm located in Ipswich Ma. Marini’s has a large selection of pre-cut Christmas Trees to choose from and a friendly staff willing help you located the right size, wrap it up and secure it to your car! Once you’ve picked the perfect tree head on inside the farm stand where you can shop for Wreaths, Kissing balls, Mistletoe and Fresh Baked Breads, Pies, Cider Donuts and a nice cup of Hot Cocoa.
Christmas On The Hill also has various activities offered throughout the month of December, one of which being their Tree Jubilee, which runs December 1, 2, 3, 8 & 9. You can wander through the greenhouse and see over two-dozen Christmas trees donated by local families and businesses. Find your favorite and enter the raffle to win! All proceeds of this fun event go directly to the Ipswich Humane Society. Wreath Making Parties are also being held December 1,2,8,&9 as well as Gingerbread and Cookie Decorating classes. Visit http://www.marinicornmaze.com/christmas for more information including hours of operation.
Another stop for all your holiday decorating needs is Tendercrop Farm Stand in Newbury, MA. Tendercrop has a selection of pre-cut trees, as well as many gorgeous handmade decorations. You can visit the farm stand year round for an abundance of prepared foods, and produce. You can find Tendercrop at 108 High Rd. in Newbury, MA.
No matter which tradition you chose to follow when it comes to your Christmas Tree, remember that this season is about being with the people you care about and love the most and making the season your own! Even if you only have space for a small “Charlie Brown” Christmas tree, if you prefer a plastic tree, or if you’d rather not have a tree at all you can visit the farms or enjoy other holiday traditions to get into the spirit. One tip we like is to cut a piece of wood from a Douglas Fir tree to warm in your oven. It will make your whole house smell amazing! What traditions will you carry on this year?
