Host a Beat the Winter Blues Party! By Allie Barone
We know it is coming every year, and yet we never really feel quite ready for winter to hit. Winter can be a wonderful time filled with fluffy snow, outdoor sports like skiing, and warm food. For many of us, however, winter can have us feeling blue. Many people are affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder, and during the colder months tend to eat more, sleep more, and feel like they have less energy overall. It makes sense since our circadian rhythm is disrupted, we get less sunshine, and often are more isolated during this season. Before you find a cave to hibernate in until Spring, challenge yourself to host an event where you and your loved ones can beat the winter blues together! It does not have to be anything extravagant, but even a small social gathering can warm up even the coldest of days.
Hosting a game night is a great way to get people together and share some laughs. Get some snacks, pull out the board games, playing cards, or ask your guests to bring their favorites.
Sometimes a good old-fashioned Dance Party is just what the Doctor ordered! Create a playlist, invite your most fun friends over, and boogie. You would be surprised how good it feels to dance! Any friends who play instruments are good to have around too!
Mmmm.. good food is often all we need to feel better. Hosting a dinner party can be a lot of work, but a Potluck Dinner where everybody brings a dish is so much fun! You can even create a theme such as Mexican or Hawaiian Luau night!
If you are a yogi, host your own yoga night. Invite friends over to do a group yoga video, drink kombucha, and listen to calming music. Exercise, friends, and zen can be a great way to warm up.
If you like to be hands-on, host your own craft event. There are endless crafts to do as a group. A popular choice is a paint and wine night. Nobody has to be a trained artist, just do it for fun! Many of have not done arts and crafts since we were kids, so this can be a fun way to bring out the creative in you!
If none of these idea appeal to you create your own night, or just have some friends over for refreshments! It is easy to remain in cozy hibernation mode, but when we are around others whom we enjoy our energy picks up and we can feel better than before!
