Atop the 1,785 ft mountain, you will get the best views of Lake Winnipesaukee and surrounding areas. This is a wonderful way to enjoy New Hampshire’s largest lake covering 69 square miles.

Once you get to Alton, the parking lot is easy to find right off Route 11. Street parking is also available. From the trailhead, you will find a map, descriptions of the trails to the summit, and, if you are lucky, sometimes a snack vendor will be on site. You have two options to reach the summit. Either take the more laborious Mt. Major Trail which includes steep terrain, boulders, and loose gravel, or you can take the Boulder Loop trail, which is the more relaxed trail. Mt. Major trail measures at 1.5 miles, while the boulder Loop trail measures 1.6 miles, so either is the perfect distance for a half-day hike. The summit is a stunning place to enjoy your lunch, rest, and take in the view. Did we mention that your dogs are welcome to enjoy the trail with you?
